At the Department of Geography, research group Climatology and Environmental modelling, Dr. Katja Trachte, we offer for a period of three years a third-party part-time position (65 % of the regular working hours) as Research Assistant (PhD Student).

The starting date is as soon as possible. Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in Germany (TV-H), pay scale E 13, and commensurate with experience.

The successful candidate will work within the DFG funded research unit RU 2730 „RESPECT – Environmental changes in biodiversity hotspot ecosystems of South Ecuador“ with the subproject „Atmospheric fluxes and optical trait diversity under climate and land use changes – observations and LSM modelling“. The project aims to quantify water and carbon fluxes using eddy-covariance measurement technique to analyses micrometeorological conditions in South Ecuador along an altitudinal and land use gradient.

The tasks include scientific services within the framework of the DFG project, particularly the establishment and support of the eddy-covariance measurement stations.

The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of the desired qualification. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of the scientific qualification. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

The successful applicant will hold an MSc-degree (with very good results) or related geosciences with focus on climatology. Profound knowledge of the atmosphere, in particular atmospheric boundary layer processes, very strong motivation for field research and longer stays in Ecuador are required. Fitness for longer field trips in high mountains (1000-3200 m a.s.l) at steep slopes and adverse weather conditions as well as the ability to climb up and work on towers 20 m above the canopy is required. Experience with eddy-covariance measurement technology is desirable. Additionally, good knowledge of statistics, solid programming skills in at least one higher programming language (C, Fortran, Java, Python) as well as experience in data analysis and visualization with software packages such as R, NCL, Matlab, IDL and/or comparable are required. The ability to work in a team as well as very good written and spoken English skills are prerequisites for a successful PhD project.
