Vacant position at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI)

Researcher at the Air Quality unit

Are you interested in strengthening our air quality research unit in the areas of atmospheric chemistry, chemical data assimilation directed towards satellite observations, or urban air quality?  If you have a doctoral degree in atmospheric science, mathematics or a related discipline this position should be of interest for you.

The air quality research unit at SMHI consists of 12 enthusiastic and dedicated women and men. Our work is research and development within environmental atmospheric modelling and focusing on three main areas: 1) Atmospheric aerosols and their coupling to climate change; 2) Dispersion and effects of air pollutants from anthropogenic and natural sources on regional to hemispheric scales; 3) Urban air quality and climate, and associated impacts on human health and well-being.

The core of our work is based on modelling systems for air quality that couple large-scale modelling domains with finer urban and local scales. For the regional to hemispheric scale, a three-dimensional chemistry transport model is used, encompassing photo chemistry, secondary organic aerosols, and chemical data assimilation among others. At the city scale, our research spans from the high-resolution downscaling of climate models to the microscale simulation of fluxes within complex urban environments. Most of our projects mean involvement in international collaboration. We also take benefit from internal cooperation within the research department, with researchers focusing on weather forecasting, climate studies and remote sensing.

The position will be based at SMHI in Norrköping, a mid-sized city located 160 km southwest of Stockholm.

Your profile:

You have a doctoral degree in atmospheric science, mathematics or a related discipline, experience in atmospheric modelling and good programming skills (scripting languages and Fortran or related and use of Unix/Linux).

In addition your profile includes experience in at least one of these areas:

  • Atmospheric chemistry modelling
  • Data assimilation, preferable experience with remote sensing data
  • Urban air quality modelling, preferably in combination with local climate modelling

The following experience is further meriting:

  • proven publication record and ability to communicate scientific results
  • capability to initiate and obtain external research funding
  • High performance computing

We require that you have good communication skills in English (verbal and written). Knowledge of other languages is an advantage. If you lack knowledge in Swedish a clear willingness to learn is required.
