Remote Sensing - Soil Moisture Internship
The Netherlands and Myanmar (Burma) Full Time

VanderSat (Haarlem, the Netherlands) in collaboration with Technical University Delft (Delft, the Netherlands) is looking for interns/thesis students, interested in going on fieldwork to Myanmar, 'Setting up a soil moisture network in Myanmar, analysing the data in space and time and thinking out potential applications in disaster management and/or other sectors '. The closing date is the 30th of January

Key aim & responsibilities:

This study will build on the work of previous interns who set up a small soil moisture (SM) network in the Bago region of Myanmar, during the summer of 2017. This network has been installed to validate satellite soil moisture products over complex tropical regions. The main aim of this study is to further improve the calibration of the soil moisture network, by adding new ground measurements. New samples have to be taken enhance the quality of the network. This will in turn improve the VanderSat soil moisture (VdS SM) signal over this the tropical region. The fieldwork will comprise of a quality assessment of the soil moisture products (both network and satellite products) and includes:

  1. Field study and maintenance of the ground stations including soil moisture sensors and disdrometers (rainfall sensors)
  2. Spatiotemporal analysis of both the field stations and satellite products
  3. Reporting and and set up of potential applications using satellite soil moisture data.
