PhD-Position for research on climate and glacier variability in
southernmost South America at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany

At Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU), the Faculty of Mathematics and
Natural Sciences, Department of Geography, invites applications for a
fully-funded PhD position (66% position, temporary for 4 years) from
April 1st, 2018. Salary is according to German state wage agreement for
scientific staff (E13 TV-L HU). After all social security and tax
deductions annual net salary ranges between 22.000 and 24.000 EUR
depending on social status.

The successful applicant will be expected to carry out her or his own
dissertation research in the fields of recent and future climate
variability and glacier change in southernmost South America. She or he
will be engaged with climate and glacier modelling. She or he is further
expected to join field work in Patagonia and Isla Grande de Tierra del
Fuego. It is expected that the candidate contributes to the maintenance
of the field equipment of the working group. The position includes a
teaching obligation of 2.5 hours per week during each winter and summer
term’s lecturing period as well as further contribution to the overall
assignments of the working group.

Applicants must hold a master degree in Geography or neighbouring fields
with core area in either physical geography, environmental sciences,
meteorology, physics, mathematics, computer sciences or similar fields.
Experience with at least one programming language and excellent mastery
of English in both written and oral form are required. Sufficient
knowledge of German and Spanish language and experience in alpine
glaciated landscapes are an advantage.
