Open position within the IPSL Labex: Computational physicist position for the development of a limited-area version of the DYNAMICO general circulation model.

Position offer:
The excellence laboratory L-IPSL of the Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace offers a position of 12 months to join a collaborative effort to develop a limited-area version of the new dynamical core DYNAMICO.

Context:
IPSL has recently developed a global non-hydrostatic atmospheric dynamical core formulated for unstructured grids, DYNAMICO (Dubos et al., 2015). DYNAMICO is currently being integrated into the IPSL global Earth system model IPSL-CM building on a icoshedral-hexagonal spherical mesh, re-using the physics of the current atmospheric component LMD-Z. Other, limited-area or periodic models (WRF, SAM) are also in use at IPSL for idealized process studies (Muller & Bony, 2015) and regional climate modelling (Drobinski et al., 2012).  In its strategic vision of building a unified global-regional modelling system, IPSL will develop in 2017 a limited-area and convection resolving demonstrator of DYNAMICO coupled to the atmospheric physics of LMDZ and the ORCHIDEE land surface model.

Description of work:
The main tasks to be undertaken are as follows :
In a first phase, an existing but experimental periodic-box version of DYNAMICO will be validated by conducting and analyzing idealized simulations with and without full physics (e.g. dry convection, Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, Muller & Bony, 2015).
In a second phase, lateral boundary conditions will be implemented following the Davies relaxation technique. The XIOS parallel I/O server will be used to build a processing chain to drive the model by reanalysis data or global climate simulations. The resulting limited-area model will be able to run realistic simulations over the Euro-Mediterranean region to be compared with previous work at IPSL (Drobinksi et al. 2012).

Diploma and skills:
To apply, a university degree equivalent to a Master’s degree or a PhD is required. The ideal candidate should have a strong experience in the development of parallel geophysical modelling systems. The candidate needs to demonstrate a high degree of scientific rigor. He/she should be able to work in English language and in a collaborative environment. He/she communicates well in oral and written about his/her ideas, problems and results. He/she has a background in atmospheric dynamics and physics and/or climate system modelling. He/she is experienced in high performance computing (unix/linux, python, shell programming, Fortran programming) and possibly parallel programming , appreciates the value of clean, well-thought code for community models and is interested in their scientific applications. Knowledge of the French language is an asset.

Supervision team:
He/she will collaborate with the different IPSL modelling teams and in particular with Thomas Dubos, Jan Polcher and Yann Meurdesoif, as well as IPSL-CMC experts of DYNAMICO, ORCHIDEE and XIOS.

Duration and salary:
The position starts as soon as possible. The engineer will be recruited as “Ingénieur de recherche” at a grade depending on his/her diploma. The contract will be initially for 12 months with a salary that depends on diploma and experience. This includes social services and health insurance. Depending on initial achievements and funding availability, an extension may be possible for 6 or 12 months.
