PhD Position in the field of climate change detection and attribution
code no. 2017/KS 15
The place of employment is Geesthacht, Germany.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more information at http://www.hzg.de.

The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites applications for a three-year PhD position in the field of climate change detection and attribution within the Coordination of Storm Themes in collaboration with the University of Reading, United Kingdom. An atmospheric state-of-the-art general circulation model was spectrally nudged with global reanalysis data to provide a detailed description of the past atmospheric state for the last decades. Applying this set-up, the main task will be to simulate and analyze different extreme weather events such as heat waves, storms, or extreme precipitation events in the context of climate change. The overall project goal is to assess the impact of known anthropogenic changes in the climate system’s thermodynamic state.

Required qualifications are:
- Master/diploma (or be about to complete) in meteorology/atmospheric physics or in a related scientific field (e.g., geophysics or earth system science)
- strong interest in extreme events, climate change detection and attribution, climate modelling and atmospheric dynamics
- experience in a higher programming language
- ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English
- experience with climate models
- good knowledge of data analysis and statistics
- strong motivation, also to publish in peer-reviewed journals and to present scientific results at international conferences

We offer you:
- multinational work environment with over 900 colleagues from more than 50 nations
- extensive options of vocational training (i. a. expert seminars, language courses or leadership seminars)
- flexible working hours and various models to ensure the compatibility of family and career
- excellent infrastructure, including a scientific in-house library as well as modern work spaces
- remuneration according to the standards of the collective wage agreement TV-AVH including further social benefits

The advancement of equality at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.

Please send your application indicating job offer code no. 2017/KS 15 including a short letter of motivation, description of research experience, CV together with a list of publications and copies of relevant certificates preferably by e-mail in one file to personal@hzg.de.

Closing date for applications is January, 2nd, 2018.
