The Forecasting Development division of the Federal Office of Meteorology and 
Climatology MeteoSwiss invites applications for a

Research associate in statistical data analysis 

80-100%, 2 years
Place of work: Zurich Airport, with regular journeys to Geneva and Locarno

The Forecasting Development division is responsible for operating and 
developing new methods for automated forecasts and decision support systems for 
meteorologists. We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to work on 
automated calibration and optimization of numerical weather model output using 
statistical methods and large observation records ("postprocessing"). Hence, 
the successful candidate is expected to combine information from a broad 
variety of data sources to improve the predictive capabilities.

Your tasks: 
* Enhancing existing methods and developing new methods and tools for automated 
postprocessing of numerical weather forecasts and integrating them into 
operational forecast production.
* Verification of weather predictions based on extensive observational records. 
* Closely collaborating with experts of MeteoSwiss and with national and 
international partners such as academia and other national weather services. 
* Publishing newly developed methods and research results in reports and 
scientific journals and presenting your work at national and international 
conferences. 


Required qualifications and experience: 
* Master or ideally a PhD in statistics, applied mathematics, meteorology, 
climatology or a related discipline of natural sciences.
* Expert knowledge and practical experience in data analysis, in particular 
(geo-)statistics and machine learning. It is an advantage to be experienced in 
the postprocessing of numerical weather or climate models, ensemble 
forecasting, multimodels, and verification.
* Good technical skill in Linux and excellent programming skills, namely in R 
and python. Experience in handling of heterogeneous, complex and very large 
meteorological data sets (TBs). 
* Fluent in English and either German or French.
* Motivated and communicative personality with a distinctive team spirit.
