Interim Head of Forecasting


Full Time |  Wageningen (Netherlands)


MeteoGroup is on a journey to become the Global Weather Authority.  Due to an upcoming period of significant change, we are looking for additional management support for our existing Forecasting management team for approximately six months, starting as soon as possible.


As Interim Head of Forecasting you will work closely with our managers who are responsible for; the professional leadership of the forecasters supporting our offerings in transport, energy and offshore, as well as our Central Guidance and Monitoring team.  Based in the Netherlands, they provide leadership to all our 7 Weather Rooms working closely in a team with the Head of Weather Applications (responsible for our media and shipping offerings) and the Head of Weather Room Operations.


Your focus will be on continued growth in the competence and skills of the forecasting teams.  You will build on and enhance the professional pride in both the quality of our forecasts and the advice we provide to our customers that we take.  From time to time you will perform shifts to ensure full understanding of the work performed and provide on the ground leadership at our busiest times, including night shifts.


You will be responsible for our forecast accuracy, customer satisfaction and the professional growth of our people, including your managerial colleagues.

Together with the senior forecasters at each location and supported by our Director, Weather Room Operations, you will develop and implement improvement initiatives, ensuring to minimise time to implementation and maximise the impact of such initiatives. An example would be the development and implementation of additional reporting tools, which will enable us to monitor our forecast accuracy and product excellence, which is key to customer needs.


Key responsibilities (in common with other members of the management team):

  • Acting as the senior subject matter expert for members of the Weather Room, Product and Marketing and Sales;
  • Identifying, planning, implementing and reviewing actions to improve forecast performance and customer satisfaction;
  • Providing Leadership for introduction of new customer and product requirements minimising time to implementation and additional costs;
  • Develop quarterly a plan for improvement with quarterly, annual and three-year objectives and report progress against the plan;
  • Providing input to Weather Room Operations Director in support of their activities including ideas for improvement, productivity improvements, cost estimates, support for recruitment and rostering, etc.;
  • Act as a thought leader for the extended leadership team supporting the GMT’s direction, leading change and being a role model for the company’s desired culture.


Our requirements:

  • At least 10 years of managerial experience within the Meteorological field;
  • A passion for understanding of meteorological phenomena and bringing excellence to weather room forecasting;
  • Demonstrated experience in developing high performing teams;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and coach others in communicating meteorological information in an engaging, clear manner for industry customers;
  • Track record of utilizing analytics for process and productivity improvement;
  • Ability to set clear vision and to create great team spirit and atmosphere; leading by example;
  • Ability to understand business needs and communicate meteorological concepts and opportunities to business leaders;
  • Flexible with a “can do” attitude but also process minded so that innovations and improvements become repeatable habit;
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written.
