The postdoctoral position is part of the multi-year EQUINOx project (DisEntangling
Quasi-geostrophic motions and INternal waves in high resolution satellite observations
of the Ocean) which aims at improving our ability to interpret satellite and in situ
data. More specifically, the project focuses on ocean small scales (<300km) and on
two classes of processes: 1/ internal gravity waves, and, 2/ mesoscale eddies and
submesoscales fronts and filaments. Both classes will be entangled in incoming
wide-swath altimetric observations of sea level (joint CNES/NASA SWOT mission) and
a central objective of EQUINOx is to propose methods that identify the respective signatures
of these processes in such observations. The postdoctoral researcher will
contribute to the analysis of both realistic and idealized numerical simulations
of the ocean circulation, as well as to the development and the testing of
aforementioned methods of disentanglement. The researcher will also be involved in
the development of the SWOT mission and will be part of the LOPS laboratory (Brest-France,
http://www.umr-lops.fr/en/) and work in close collaboration with Aurelien Ponte and
other members of the EQUINOx project.

Contract may start as early as January 2018 and will last 18 months (initial
one-year contract, with additional 6 months contingent on mutual satisfaction)

Who can apply:
The candidate should have a strong background in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics.
Knowledge about the dynamics of mesoscale/submesoscale processes and/or internal
gravity wave dynamics are preferred but not required. The candidate may come from
the Ocean, Atmosphere, or Astrophysics community. Some skills in analyzing numerical
simulations outputs (ROMS, MITgcm, NEMO's in particular) will be preferred.
Knowledge about data assimilation techniques and inverse modelling will be welcome.
