Eurac Research is looking for a
Master’s student/trainee for the project CYCLAMEN
Master Student/Praktikant für das Projekt CYCLAMEN
Studente master/Tirocinante nell’ambito del progetto CYCLAMEN
Short description of the position/project:
The EURAC Institute for Earth Observation is looking for a Master
student/trainee within the project CYCLAMEN: Cycling of carbon and water
in mountain ecosystems under changing climate and land use.
Combined carbon-water cycle feedbacks due to climate and land-use change
are poorly constrained, but may be expected to significantly alter the
provisioning of important ecosystem services. Mountain ecosystems in the
European Alps are hot spots of climate and land use changes. While a
wealth of data exists on the carbon and water cycling in mountain
ecosystems in the Alps, these have not been analyzed in a synthetic
fashion and not in a way that allows projecting to likely future
climatic and land-use conditions. This lack of knowledge hampers an
assessment of the consequences of future climate and land?use change
scenarios on ecosystem services and the development of appropriate
The overarching objective of the present project is to fill this major
research gap and to quantify and project the resilience and
vulnerability of ecosystem carbon and water cycling in North and South
Tyrol, as well as the ecosystem services these are provisioning to
likely future changes in climate and land use.
The student/trainee will have to support a senior researcher in the
・Collect timeseries of remote sensing reflectances (MODIS, Landsat,
Sentinel-2) at the eddy-covariance stations in North and South Tyrol;
・Implement an established spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance
fusion model between MODIS and Landsat reflectances;
・Contribute to data analysis and synthesis activities.
・Excellent command of spoken and written English and/or Italian;
・Good knowledge of the R programming language (or similar);
・Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering,
Environmental science, Information Engineering, or related discipline;
・Knowledge of the fundamentals of optical Remote Sensing;
・Aptitude to work in an interdisciplinary team, and motivation to learn.
-Opportunity to work in a young and interdisciplinary team;
-Involvement in an international project;
-Experience in environmental remote sensing;
-An internship of 6 months, to be started as soon as possible.
In addition, according to the internship results and funds availability,
we will evaluate the possibility to finance a PhD scholarship on related
