Eurac Research is looking for a

Data Scientist

Short description of the position/project:

In the light of an ever-rising amount of data from an increasing number
of earth observation satellites, we are in need of an efficient data
organization for our research and operational products at Eurac
Research. We are producing different raster and gridded time series for
the alpine area describing biophysical parameters and climatic
scenarios. Those have to be stored in an easily accessible way for
further analysis and creation of mapping services. We have setup a
multidimensional array database, which allows exposing raster and
gridded data via OGC standards like WCS and WCPS as web services.

We are looking for a researcher and developer with knowledge in both
earth observation and data science to support our effort to promote
raster data cubes in a number of our running and planned projects for 2018.

Tasks:

·Organize various types of earth observation data, predominantly from
satellites, in data cubes

·Create and further develop existing APIs to easily access and analyze
this data

·Support activities in various research projects with respect to data
processing and analysis

Requirements:

·Master’s Degree in Data Science, Geoinformatics or similar

·Good knowledge in at least one programming language (such as python, R,
C++ or java)

·Good experience working in a Linux environment (knowing the basic
tools, shell scripts etc.)

·Good knowledge and experience in http REST protocols and APIs

·Understanding of relational databases and SQL

·Understanding of earth observation data and map projections

·Basic GIS skills (e.g. QGIS, GRASS or ArcMap)

·Good command of the English language (additionally knowing either
German or Italian is a plus)

We offer:

Working in an international environment of young and engaged researches
and developers. You will work in close conjunction with our group of
technology for environmental monitoring at the Institute for Earth
Observation whose main objective is to develop innovative technological
solutions in the field of environmental monitoring. The contract is
foreseen to be carried out for at least one year in full time.

How to apply:

Interested candidates should submit their online application (CV,
cover letter and further relevant documents) within 12.11.2017 to the
following address:
