Forwarded from CLIMLIST... The Dept. of Geography and Environmental Development at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheva, Israel, is seeking applications for a PhD position in climate modeling at the urban and regional scale. The research work will be embedded within a study funded by the Israel Ministry of Science on “The Effects of Urban Microclimate Variability and Global Climate Change on Heat-Related Cardiovascular Outcomes in the Semi-Arid Environment of Southern Israel”. The project seeks to: 1) Develop better hybrid dynamic geo-statistical assessment methods of air temperature and heat stress at high spatial (1km, 250m) and temporal resolution in urban and rural settlements; 2) Characterize the effects of acute and chronic exposure to high air temperature and heat stress on cardiovascular risk; 3) Investigate whether the health effects differ among urban neighborhoods and between urban and rural populations (since urban conditions such as the urban heat island (UHI) can lead to increased heat stress). The candidate will develop physical and statistical models of the near- surface air temperature at different scales and will be expected to present results at international scientific meetings and publish in the peer-reviewed literature. We are looking for a student with strong interest in climate, spatial analysis or epidemiology and with solid numerical (Fortran, Python,R) and geo-statistical skills (Qgis,ArcGIS). Applicants should have a Master in Geography, Environmental/Climate Sciences, or similar disciplines. Curiosity, enthusiasm, excellent writing and communication skills in English are also essential. The scholarship will be awarded according to Ben-Gurion University guidelines, and will be approx. 25,000 euro/year for a period of 4 years. Applications should be in the form of a single pdf file and include a CV, a statement of research experience and interests (max. 2 pages), an academic transcript of your studies, a web link to the master thesis, and the names and addresses of at least 2 references. Please contact: Prof. Evyatar Erell or Prof. Itai Kloog (details below) Consideration of applications begins immediately. The position will stay open until filled. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Evyatar Erell Associate Professor Geography and Environmental Development Ben Gurion University of the Negev phone +972 8 659 6878 email email@example.com <mailto: firstname.lastname@example.org> url <http:// www.bgu.ac.il/~erell> Itai Kloog Associate Professor Geography and Environmental Development Ben Gurion University of the Negev phone +972 8 6472003 email email@example.com <mailto: firstname.lastname@example.org> url <http://in.bgu.ac.il/humsos/eeal/Pages/default.aspx> +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
