Postdoctoral-level position in Mesoscale Modeling and Mountain Climate A position at the postdoctoral level is available in the Earth Research Institute and the Department of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The successful candidate will participate in a research project led by Professor Leila Carvalho (<http://clivac.eri.ucsb.edu>). The main goals of this project are to understand the mechanisms involved with Sundowner winds and interactions with wildfires. Sundowner winds are a typical climatic feature of the Santa Barbara area in southern California. Specific objectives include: 1) understand synoptic-to-mesoscale mechanisms of downslope windstorms and extreme fire-weather regimes in Santa Barbara, 2) investigate probabilities of fire spread and fire-weather risk at the wildland-urban interface, 3) develop enhanced evacuation strategies using transportation and land use models. The position is a full-time training program of advanced academic preparation and research training under the mentorship of Dr. Leila Carvalho. This position is full time and offers a competitive salary and benefits. The initial appointment is for one year. Continuation beyond one year will be based on performance and availability of funding. The ideal starting date for the position is September 30, 2017 but will be open until filled. The Department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service. Basic qualifications: Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, or a closely related field, prior to the date of hire. Additional qualifications: Strong experience running the WRF model, Linux environment and programming skills. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. Appointees should have experience working independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
