Postdoctoral-level position in Mesoscale Modeling and Mountain Climate

A position at the postdoctoral level is available in the Earth Research
Institute and the Department of Geography at the University of
California, Santa Barbara. The successful candidate will participate in
a research project led by Professor Leila Carvalho
(<http://clivac.eri.ucsb.edu>). The main goals of this project are to
understand the mechanisms involved with Sundowner winds and interactions
with wildfires. Sundowner winds are a typical climatic feature of the
Santa Barbara area in southern California. Specific objectives include:
1) understand synoptic-to-mesoscale mechanisms of downslope windstorms
and extreme fire-weather regimes in Santa Barbara, 2) investigate
probabilities of fire spread and fire-weather risk at the wildland-urban
interface, 3) develop enhanced evacuation strategies using
transportation and land use models. The position is a full-time training
program of advanced academic preparation and research training under the
mentorship of Dr. Leila Carvalho. This position is full time and offers
a competitive salary and benefits. The initial appointment is for one
year. Continuation beyond one year will be based on performance and
availability of funding. The ideal starting date for the position is
September 30, 2017 but will be open until filled. The Department is
especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity
and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and
service.
