BMT ARGOSS is expanding its business and is looking for a Meteorological Developer to join our team. The position will be focused on the development of forecasts products and web based visualization and decision support tools, but improvement of the software used internally by our forecasters will also be part of the job. Solid application development and data handling skills, ability to design and/or implement algorithms and creativity are all emphasized. The position is based in our office in Amersfoort.

 

BMT ARGOSS is a BMT Group company providing metocean and weather forecasting services. We help our clients elevate their operational efficiency and calculate the weather risk on marine operations. We have a friendly, open organizational structure and taking your own initiative is highly appreciated.

 

Key tasks and responsibilities

·         To develop new and improve existing forecasts products

·         To develop and maintain client facing web applications for data visualization and decision support

·         To design and implement methods that enhance our productivity and forecast accuracy

·         To work closely with the DevOps team in order to plan future enhancements

 

Required skills and experience

·         You have a background in environmental sciences or computer science

·         You have thorough understanding of meteorology

·         Familiarity with Linux, including significant knowledge of scripting languages

·         Hands-on practical software coding experience in Python or a comparable general purpose language, and at least basic knowledge of object-oriented programming

·         Familiarity with various scientific data formats (i.e. GRIB, NetCDF, HDF)

·         Interest in web development and client side visualization

·         Able to work well both independently and within a team environment

·         Good communication skills in English, both oral and written, and preferably also in Dutch

 

Preferred skills

Not required skills, but would be beneficial to have:

·         Experience with web technologies like _javascript_, HTML5 and/or WebGL

·         Knowledge of OpenDAP / THREDDS

·         Knowledge of meteorological modelling (especially WRF) and data assimilation

·         Familiarity with satellite remote sensing

·         Knowledge of NumPy/SciPy

·         SQL and database programming skills

·         Understanding of the operational weather forecasting process
