BMT ARGOSS in The Netherlands is expanding its business and is looking for a Metocean Numerical Modeller. The position is based in our office in Amersfoort. You will set up and operate wave, atmospheric and hydrodynamic forecast models on global and regional scales. Your models will enable the day to day forecasting operation to provide reliable forecasts that benefit clients operating in marine environments globally. The models you build are operated in an efficient manner on a remote High Performance Computing (HPC) system that is Linux based. As part of a continuous development you will keep up to date with relevant technical advancements in both the academic and marine industry communities and work to implement promising developments into the operation.

Key tasks and responsibilities

·         Build, tune, validate and run metocean (forecast) model grids

·         Enable an accurate and reliable model data flow to the meteorological desk

·         Provide input and/or take ownership of forecast and hindcast projects

·         Provide input to tender preparation and carry out project management tasks

·         Instruct and collaborate with other associated metocean modellers and stakeholders

·         Keep up to date with relevant scientific and technical metocean modelling developments

Required skills and experience

·         Expert knowledge of WAVEWATCH III and SWAN

·         A basic understanding of the WRF model

·         A basic understanding of hydrodynamic modelling (preferably ADCIRC)

·         Experience in evaluating and analysing modelled and in-situ observation data

·         Familiarity with Linux, including significant knowledge of scripting languages

·         Practical software coding experience in Python or a comparable general purpose language

·         Able to work well both independently and within a team environment

·         Good communication skills in English, both oral and written, and preferably also in Dutch

Preferred skills

Not required skills, but would be beneficial to have:

·         Knowledge of meteorological modelling (especially WRF) and data assimilation

·         Involvement and / or interest in model coding

·         Familiarity with satellite remote sensing

·         Technical and scientific report writing skills

·         Experience with flow modelling (Preferably ADCIRC)

·         Experience with sediment transport modelling

·         Experience with remote High Performance Compute environments

·         Understanding of the operational weather forecasting process

·         Interest in web development and client side visualization
