https://jobs.reading.ac.uk/DisplayJob.aspx?jobid=1331&source=coz We seek a motivated researcher to join the UK Earth system model core development team, which has responsibility to develop, apply, evaluate and support the use of future generation UK Earth system models (UKESM). The applicant will work on the development of novel techniques to exploit satellite data in the evaluation and development of the UK’s new Earth system model, UKESM1. This is an exciting opportunity to join both the UKESM core team and the new NERC-funded UKESM Long Term Science Multi-centre project. UKESM1will be a national UK modelling resource and constitutes the UK’s primary contribution to the forthcoming 6th Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). This is a scientific post with an initial focus on evaluating biophysical and biogeochemical land-atmosphere interactions involving the carbon and water cycles. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in at least two of the following areas: The quantitative use of Earth Observation data at global scales Biophysical processes relevant to land-atmosphere interactions Earth system models and/or climate models They will also have: Excellent programming skills, ideally in FORTRAN and Python Demonstrable experience of working with large datasets Strong verbal and written communication skills The National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) is a distributed centre of approximately 100 scientists from UK institutions including the University of Reading. This role will form part of NCEO’s commitment to delivering National Capability in Earth Observation science to NERC and forms a part of the NCEO contribution to the UKESM LTSM project and the UKESM core group.
