The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht hosts a number of highly motivated and experienced researchers in the field of numerical modeling of regional and coastal circulation, surface waves, sediment transport, biogeochemistry, data assimilation and remote sensing. Together with seven other Helmholtz Institutes, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht takes part in the Advanced Earth System Modelling Capacity (ESM) project, a major coordinated effort towards a modular Earth System modeling, data assimilation and analysis of the extreme marine and coastal events and their future development and impacts. For these activities Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is looking for a highly motivated Scientist (m/f) in Earth System Modeling and Extremes code-no. 2017/KS 4 with knowledge and experience in modelling and data analyses. The position is limited to 3 years. The successful applicant will have University degree in one of the following disciplines: Physics, Mathematics, Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Science or related disciplines. A background in modeling and programming, in particular ocean and/or wave or atmosphere models is desirable. Good skills in scientific programming (FORTRAN) as well as working with computers (Unix/Linux) are expected, as well as good knowledge of the English language (written and oral). The main tasks will include development and application of coupled modelling system; performing improved hind- and forecasts of the extremes (especially under storm and surge flooding conditions), identification of the favorable conditions for the appearance of extremes, as well as monitoring the present trends derived from satellite data using the newly available satellites (e.g. Sentinel). Ability and willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team are desirable. We offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements. Please send your application indicating job offer code-no. 2017/KS 4 including a short letter of motivation, CV together with a list of publications and copies of relevant certificates preferably by e-mail in one file not larger than 10 MB to firstname.lastname@example.org<mailto:email@example.com>.
