Reuniwatt is a French start-up, settled in Reunion Island (Indian Ocean) and Paris. Reuniwatt’s team has developed a unique and patented solar power production forecasting tool named Soleka. Soleka uses artificial intelligence-based techniques, vision systems, numerical models and satellite images to achieve efficient predictions.

Photovoltaic (PV) production forecasting essentially consists of predicting the cloud cover above a given site. For irradiance forecasts beyond some hours ahead, numerical weather prediction (NWP) models are the only reliable tool to provide such forecasts. The regional NWP model WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) is a highly flexible model which allows irradiance forecasting at high spatio-temporal resolutions. The accuracy of regional NWP forecasts is largely influenced by the initial conditions (or analysis) of the model. The assimilation of radiance or cloud property observations helps to improve the cloud analysis and the subsequent irradiance forecast. Many data assimilation packages exist for WRF. Finding the optimal satellite data assimilation strategy for a given site is a complex challenge. In partnership with the University of La Réunion, Reuniwatt started a Ph.D. on this subject which led to selection of a panel of data assimilation strategies. These strategies must now be tested to come up with the best configuration.

The objective of this internship is to explore the potential of satellite data assimilation with WRF regarding irradiance forecasting under tropical conditions. To do so, the intern will benefit from the experience of Reuniwatt’s meteorology team and particularly from the Ph.D. student.

Bachelor/Master of Science in one of the following fields: Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Physics, Remote Sensing, Applied Mathematics.

We are looking for a skilled and motivated intern interested in numerical weather prediction, data assimilation and renewable energies.
Experience with NWP models would be desirable.
Experience with one or more of these tools would be a plus: WRF, NCL, R, Matlab, shell scripting.

The intern will be based in Reunion Island (St Pierre).

6 months beginning 2nd semester 2017.

€700 raw/month (~€650/month), 1 round-trip flight ticket to Reunion Island.
