Post-doctoral position at CNRM (France): Representation of the convective boundary-layer dynamics: use of an automatic tuning tool in the 1D/LES framework to improve parameterizations Required education: PhD in atmospheric science From: as soon as 1st June Duration: 24 months Salary: from 2300 to 2500 euros net/month depending on experience (CNRS salary grid) Contact: Fleur couvreux (CNRM, email@example.com); Catherine Rio (CNRM, firstname.lastname@example.org); Rachel Honnert (CNRM, email@example.com) Application: should include a CV, statement of research activities and interests as well as the contact information for two referees Application closure date: 15/05/2017 A postdoctoral position is available at CNRM (Meteo-France and CNRS), at Toulouse (Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques, 42 av G Coriolis, 31057 Toulouse, France) to work on the representation of the convective boundary-layer dynamics. It is funded by the French Agency for National Research, in the framework of HIGH-TUNE (http://www.umr-cnrm.fr/high-tune/). This project aims at improving the representation of boundary-layer clouds in models focusing on the boundary-layer dynamics and cloud-radiation interaction. The work will involve: (i) running Large-Eddy simulations of identified cases to analyse their sensitivity to the parameterizations as well as the configuration; this will allow to estimate the uncertainties associated to the LES results. (ii) contribution to a new strategy for the tuning of the parameterization based on a statistical method applied on the comparison of Single-Column model runs and Large-Eddy simulations. The results of this new methodology will be used to propose new formulations for the parameterization of the turbulence and the parameterization of the thermals in the boundary layer (iii) the development of parameterizations. In particular, the postdoc fellow will be in charge in the development of a mass-flux scheme for the representation of top-down coherent features We thus seek experience in either parameterization development or in high-resolution modelling. A strong knowledge in boundary layer features is more than welcome.
