The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more information at http://www.hzg.de.

The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), a scientific organizational entity of Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Centre for Materials and Coastal Research, invites applications for a Senior Scientist (m/f), as soon as possible,as part of the Helmholtz society funded activity “Advanced Earth System Modelling Capacity” (ESM). Within the first phase of ESM a flexible framework for the effective coupling of existing earth system model components will be developed and applied by conducting frontier simulations as demonstration cases.

The position is limited till 31.03.2020.

Areas of responsibilities:
-        Develop and evaluate the next generation limited-area climate model of GERICS.
-        Develop modular coupling interfaces for a limited-area climate model component within the ESM framework which may include but is not limited to interfaces with socio-economic models.
-        Conduct and evaluate selected frontier climate simulations with the newly developed model framework within ESM.
-        Contribute thematically and technically to the progress of the entire modelling framework within ESM.
-        Compile scientific and technical publications of the findings of the different areas in related international peer-reviewed research journals.

Profile of qualifications:
-        A university degree in meteorology, physics, maths or other related disciplines in natural sciences and earth science is essential. A Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline would be beneficial.
-        Extensive experience in the field of regional or global modelling of the climate or Earth system, preferably experience with limited-area climate models and their coupling with other earth system model components.
-        Extensive experience in using high-performance computing facilities.
-        Familiarity with the analysis of data sets from climate models. Excellent knowledge of the programming language Fortran. Profound knowledge in appropriate programming languages such as Python and R and experience with Linux/Unix computer environments.
-        Experience in communicating scientific results to scientists.
-        Experience in contributing (scientifically and organizationally) to international scientific projects and networks, such as the EURO-CORDEX initiative.
-        Excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English, as well as a record of peer reviewed publications in order to demonstrate the skill to publish the work in scientific journals.
-        Willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team at the Climate Service Center Germany. Interest beyond the pure scientific analysis of data and processes is expected as the focus of our center is on the provision of decision making knowledge.
