The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites applications for a highly motivated
code-no. 2017/KS 5
with knowledge and experience in modelling and data analyses. The position is limited to 3 years.
The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht hosts a number of highly motivated and experienced researchers in the field of numerical modeling of regional atmosphere, ocean dynamics, surface waves, sediment transport, biogeochemistry, data assimilation and remote sensing. Together with seven other Helmholtz Institutes, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht takes part in the Advanced Earth System Modelling Capacity (ESM) project, a major coordinated effort towards a modular Earth System modeling, data assimilation and analysis of the extreme marine and coastal events and their future development and impacts.
The main task of the applicant will be the compilation of a high-resolution, coupled model for atmospheric and ocean from existing components, in order to enable answering different scientific questions. These include in particular feedback processes with a focus on the coastal area. A special study will be the impact of "offshore" wind farms on the physico-biological system of the North Sea. For this, the coupled regional atmosphere-ocean model is complemented by a parameterization for wind farms.
The successful applicant will have a university degree in one of the following disciplines: Atmospheric Science, Ocean Science, Geophysics or related disciplines. A background in modeling and programming, in particular atmosphere and/or ocean models is an advantage. Good skills in scientific programming (FORTRAN) is indispensable. Good skills in working with computers (Unix/Linux) are expected, as well as good knowledge of the English language (written and oral). The knowledge of the programming language R for statistics and graphics is an advantage.
Candidates must be able to work in a group environment and collaborate across disciplinary boundaries. The willingness to travel is a prerequisite as it is indispensable for the presentation of the scientific results in international workshops and conferences.
We offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.
Please send your application indicating job offer code-no. 2017/KS 5 including a short letter of motivation, CV and copies of relevant certificates preferably by e-mail to email@example.com.
Application period from March, 24th, 2016 to April, 21st, 2017
