The Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF), Italy invites applicants for a post-doc position of one year renewable
that will start in spring time 2017. Deadline of application is 10 April 2017.

The candidate is supposed to join the Optical Turbulence research group and to be involved in all national and international projects carried on by the group in the field of the optical turbulence forecast applied to the ground-based astronomy. Among these projects, an automatic and operational system for the forecast of the optical turbulence for a couple among the  top class ground-based telescopes in the world: the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), two 8 m telescopes at Mt. Graham (Arizona) working in interferometric configuration and the Very Large Telescope (VLT), four 8 m class telescopes at Cerro Paranal (Chile). 

The optical turbulence is particularly critical for ground-based astronomical observations because it
perturbs the amplitude and the phase of wavefronts coming from observed astronomical objects producing blurred
images at the focus of telescopes decreasing the potential angular resolution of a 8-10 m class telescope
to that of a 10 cm telescope.
Adaptive optics (AO) techniques are able to correct a great part of these perturbations but these techniques
strongly depend on the optical turbulence conditions. AO best performances (and consequently the most challenging
astrophysical observations) are obtained when the optical turbulence is weak.
Forecasts of the optical turbulence is therefore fundamental to optimize astronomical observations.
