Call for applications to work at the Institut Franco-Argentin d'études sur le climat et ses impacts, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The direction of "Institut Franco-Argentin d'études sur le climat et ses impacts" (IFAECI) in Buenos Aires, Argentina advertises two positions available by September 2017. They are opened by CNRS to the candidacy of researchers and academics from metropolitan France, for a minimum stay of two years.

IFAECI (<>) is a Unité Mixte Internationale (UMI), i.e., a joint international laboratory, between the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France and the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) and the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) in Argentina.

One main mission of the UMI is to foster long-lasting collaborations between Argentina and France. IFAECI members are expected to actively develop new collaborations and maintain existing ones. Visits and exchanges between Argentina and France are also strongly encouraged.

The backbone of IFAECI in Argentina is the Centro de Investigaciones del Mar y la Atmósfera (CIMA <>), a joint institute between CONICET and UBA, but it also includes research groups located at different facilities of both UBA and CONICET, and gathers around 55 researchers. The main French counterpart of IFAECI is the Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace (IPSL <>) in the Paris area, but cooperation with other French partners is also encouraged. Because IFAECI is a CNRS laboratory, all its researchers may apply to calls for projects emanating from INSU, ANR, etc., which has proved very successful in the past years.

The research agenda of IFAECI is articulated along three general axes: (i) to better observe, understand, simulate and predict physical processes driving climate variability and climate change at regional scale and at every temporal scale, (ii) to foster studies addressing how climate variability and change will impact population, biodiversity, production and vulnerability, and (iii) to generate climate information for application and adaptation.

Geographically, the IFAECI research concerns, first of all, southeastern South America (which is characterized by a signal of large climate variability and change impacting the socio-economic regions of Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay); the extratropical Andes region (which contains vulnerable mountain glaciers and water sources with strong socio-economic impacts on both Argentina and Chile); the South Atlantic Ocean (its western portion being one of the most productive regions of the world and including the Río de la Plata Estuary, of large relevance for Argentina and Uruguay). IFAECI researchers also have strong cooperation with colleagues of other institutions of South America (Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, etc.). Because of its strong emphasis on process studies and the development of observation and modeling tools, the research carried out at IFAECI is also fully relevant to other parts of the world.

More information about IFAECI and recent activities can be found at <>.

Applications from all fields of climate research are welcome. Applicants must hold a permanent position in France, from a public research organization (such as CNRS) or from a university under cover of a CNRS appointment (délégation CNRS). Non-CNRS applicants should inquire about the conditions set up by their home institution, preferably before applying to the positions.

The initial deadline for applications is 15 February 2017, and evaluation will start immediately after. Applications will be received until the positions are filled.

We strongly encourage initial contacts before applying:
Dr. Claudia G. Simionato, Director of the UMI IFAECI (<>), Dr. Bruno Blanke, Scientific Deputy Director at CNRS/INSU (<>). Application forms should include a research statement, a plan for on-going and foreseen research collaborations in Argentina, and a brief CV. Applications should be sent to CNRS/INSU (for the attention of Bruno Blanke, <>).
