Department of Geography at Virginia Tech is currently recruiting M.S. Geography
graduate students to commence research in the fall of 2017, and I am pleased to
offer competitive Graduate Teaching Assistantship funding for well-qualified
students with research interests in weather and climate.
Prospective graduate students are encouraged to apply if they
are interested in research at the intersection of meteorology and
geography. Potential research topics include 1) tropical cyclone
structure and dynamics, particularly on the spatial distribution of
precipitation throughout the tropical cyclone life cycle, 2) the application of
shape measures and spatial statistics in research methodologies and in the
development of operational meteorology forecasting tools, and 3) the
representation of precipitation, severe weather, and tropical cyclones in
climate and/or numerical weather prediction (NWP) models.
Applicants must possess a background in Geography, Meteorology,
or a related field. Experience with computer programming software (e.g, Matlab, NCL, Python, R) or with
geospatial software (ArcGIS, QGIS) is essential. Familiarity with NWP models such as the Weather
Research, and Forecasting (WRF) model would also be valuable but is not
The Department of Geography at Virginia Tech is a dynamic,
growing and collaborative environment with 14 full-time faculty and 25 graduate
students. In addition to the M.S. Geography program, the department offers a
Ph.D. in Geospatial Analysis, a B.A. in Geography and a B.S. in
Meteorology. Additionally, the department has established a strong
partnership with National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg, VA, and
collaborative research opportunities with the NWS may be possible depending on
the research project.
Virginia Tech is located in Blacksburg, VA, which is situated in
the mountains of southwest Virginia, approximately 45 minutes west of
Roanoke. Outdoor opportunities abound in the region, with the New River
and Appalachian Trail in close proximity to the Virginia Tech campus.
