Within the DFG project „AWiCiT (Arctic Winter Cirrus Thinning)“, we are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate who is interested in investigating ice formation processes in cirrus clouds.
Within this project, the PhD candidate will mainly conduct experiments at the AIDA (Aerosol Interactions and Dynamics in the Atmosphere) cloud simulation chamber investigating ice formation processes. She/he will systematically investigate the freezing properties of aerosol mixtures with different ice nucleation properties (e.g. different desert dusts or artificial meteoric dust). The results will also be used to improve the representation of cirrus clouds in climate models, which will be a major pre-requisite for testing hypotheses regarding different climate engineering approaches in the future.
We offer an exciting project with a strong focus on experimental work, the AIDA chamber being the largest cloud simulation facility in Europe. The candidate will also have the opportunity to present her/his work at (international) workshops and conferences.
We are looking for a candidate with a background in (environmental) physics or meteorology, high motivation to work in a great lab environment and very good analytical skills. Ideally, the candidate would have experience in MATLAB or else. Fluency in English is highly desirable.
