The call is open, until 15 November, for a short-term (6-month) postdoctoral
fellowship at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Sciences (CESAM),
Department of Physics, University of Aveiro, Portugal.

Field: Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Meteorology and Climate

Project title: Extreme precipitation events and surface mass balance in
Antarctica: investigating the role of atmospheric rivers

Project description: Antarctica has the potential to contribute more
than a meter of sea-level rise by 2100 in response to the occurring
global climate warming. At the same time intense precipitation events
over specific regions of Antarctica can determine the sign of the total
mass balance change of the entire ice sheet. Links have been established
between extreme precipitation events in East Antarctica with atmospheric
rivers - narrow and long-band features of intense moisture transport
from lower latitudes. This project aims to extend the analysis to the
entire ice sheet, and will use unique measurements to be gathered during
the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition next austral summer, in order
to explore the role of atmospheric rivers in precipitation over the
Antarctic ice sheet and the Southern Ocean.

The specific objectives of this postdoctoral fellowship are:

- Perform high-resolution regional climate model simulations (using the
Polar version of the WRF-ARW model) over several Antarctic/Southern
ocean domains for specific extreme precipitation cases
- Use the precipitation and other meteorological data gathered during
the ACE expedition and available satellite products for model evaluation
- Investigate mechanisms behind extreme precipitation events
(association with atmospheric rivers, warm conveyor belts, tropical
moisture exports, other synoptic and mesoscale dynamic phenomena, as
well as exploring oceanic influences on the moisture amounts and
transports) using the regional climate model simulations, reanalysis
data, and available measurements

Admission requirements:
- PhD in the area of Atmospheric and Earth Sciences or a related field.
- Work experience in numerical simulations with regional climate models
and/or weather forecasting models, including model parameterisation
- Work experience in processing large data sets including output from
numerical models, reanalysis products and satellite data
- Interest and experience in polar climate research preferably
demonstrated with relevant publications
- Computer skills with desired proficiency in FORTRAN, netcdf
processing, and data analysis software (NCL, matlab, R..)

Workplace: The work will be done at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Sciences (CESAM), Department of Physics, University of Aveiro, Portugal, under the supervision of the CESAM researcher

Dr Irina Gorodetskaya and co-supervised by Prof Alfredo Rocha.

Collaborations: Scripps  Institution of Oceanography, UCSD (USA); EPFL (Switzerland), KUL (Belgium), University of Lisboa (Portugal)

Length of contract: The grant duration is 6 months, starting on 1 December 2016.

Salary: The amount of the grant corresponds to €1495 per month, according to FCT values for Portugal
