DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
Faculty of Arts and Science
University of Toronto

JOB POSTING – POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW

Area of Research:
Measurements of atmospheric composition are crucial for assessing the changes occurring in the Earth's atmosphere due to human activity. Observations made from high-altitude balloon platforms provide insight into the distribution of these trace gases with altitude as well as concentration. The Canadian Atmospheric Laser Absorption Spectrometer Experiment Test-bed (CALASET) project is developing a new measurement capability for Canada by utilizing balloon-borne laser spectroscopy.

Description of duties:
The successful applicant will be part of a team developing a new payload for in situ measurements of the atmosphere from a high-altitude balloon platform. This payload will be used to measure profiles of trace gases. Working with the CALASET team, the PDF will be responsible for the development of an infrared laser absorption spectrometer including contributions to the design, construction, testing and deployment phases. The position is based in Toronto, Canada and will be jointly supervised by Prof. Kaley Walker and Prof. Wolfgang Jaeger (Department of Chemistry, University of Alberta). This position will involve travel and extended field work. Also, the PDF will spend part of their time working in Prof. Jaeger’s group in Edmonton, Canada. The period and timing to be negotiated between the supervisors and successful applicant.

Salary:
$45,000 per year.

Required qualifications:
A Ph.D. degree in Physics, Chemistry or a relevant field is required. We seek a candidate with expertise in construction and/or operation of field or laboratory instrumentation and programming with Python and Linux. Experience with laser spectroscopy (including diode or QCL technologies), scientific balloon measurements and/or atmospheric monitoring would be very advantageous.

Application instructions
All individuals interested in this position must submit a CV, the names and contact information for at least two referees, and a statement summarizing their experience and how it is relevant to this position to Prof. Kaley Walker (via email at kaley.walker@utoronto.ca) by the closing date.

Closing date: 14 November 2016.

Supervisor: Prof. Kaley A. Walker (U. Toronto) / Prof. Wolfgang Jaeger (U. Alberta).

Expected start date: 1 January 2017.

Term: Up to two years and three months.

FTE: 1.0
