[Met-jobs] Scientist / PhD position on Air Quality Modelling and Satellite Remote Sensing at Augsburg University and German Aerospace Center (DLR)

Dear colleagues,

The Institute of Physics at the Augsburg University and the German Remote 
Sensing Data Center of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) are offering a 
position for

a researcher / scientist
(Payment by salary group 13 TV-L / 2)

for half of the regular working hours per week which is suitable for graduation 
(PhD). The position will open on October 1, 2016 and will be limited until 
September 30, 2019. 

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is now the 
world's biggest environmental health risk. The main objective of the position 
is research and development for an improved monitoring and short-term forecast 
of aerosols and nitrogen dioxide in Bavaria and Slovenia. By combining 
satellite-based observations and numerical modeling a significantly higher 
accuracy and a better understanding of processes in the atmosphere shall be 
achieved. For the first time, data of the new European space infrastructure 
Copernicus and its Sentinel satellites will be combined with the air quality 
model system POLYPHEMUS / DLR to achieve the objectives above.

The position is within the project JOSEFINA (Joint Bavarian Slovenian Endeavor 
For Innovative Air Quality Analysis), funded by the Bavarian Ministry for 
Environment and Consumer Protection. The work will be carried out in close 
cooperation of Augsburg University with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), 
Oberpfaffenhofen, and the Environmental Research Station Schneefernerhaus 
(UFS), Zugspitze. 

The position comprises the following tasks:
.       Research on the variability of air pollutants (particulate matter and 
NO2) in Bavaria and Slovenia
.       Evaluation of measurements of the satellites Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-5P
.       Further development of numerical air quality analysis and forecasting 
system POLYPHEMUS / DLR
.       Application and further development of methods of data assimilation to 
integrate the measurements in the model system
.       Evaluation of the analysis and forecasting accuracy
.       Comparison of the results with in-situ measurements
.       Documentation and presentation of research results in the context of 
project reports, national and international presentations and scientific 
publications.

Candidates should have a university degree (Master) in physics, meteorology or 
adjacent natural or engineering sciences with above average grades.

The candidate should show great interest in the scientific problems of the 
atmosphere, satellites and numerical modeling. Furthermore good programming 
skills in a high level language (for example, Fortran, C, etc.) as well as good 
English skills in speaking and writing are required. Skills in numerical 
modeling are desirable. Flexibility and reliability as well as an independent 
and result-oriented approach and team skills are required.

The required qualification shall be demonstrated in the application documents 
by the relevant certificates.
