München invites applications for a


Postdoctoral Position

in

Rocketborne ion mass spectrometry


The position is part of a research project in which in-situ measurements with 
sounding rockets are foreseen to investigate neutral atmosphere and ionosphere 
conditions during strong radar echoes from the polar winter mesosphere 
(so-called polar mesosphere winter echoes, PMWE, ca. 60-80 km altitude). In 
collaboration with the DLR-Institute of Atmospheric Physics, the Chair of 
Atmospheric Physics at LMU is preparing an ion mass spectrometer which is to be 
launched on one of two currently scheduled sounding rockets. The aim of these 
ion measurements is to characterize the ion composition in the vicinity of PMWE 
for which so far no conclusive generation mechanism has been proposed. 
Particular emphasis will be given to the detection of large cluster ions (up to 
nanometer scale) which might possibly play an important role in the generation 
of these radar echoes.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with experimental skills in the 
field of mass spectrometry. The position is initially awarded for 15 months 
(payscale TV?\L E13 100%) with the possibility for further extension pending 
future funding decisions. The postdoctoral researcher will be placed at the 
Institute for Atmospheric Physics at the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und 
Raumfahrt (German Aerospace Center, DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen, see

Essential skills:
- Ph.D. degree in physics or equivalent
- Laboratory experience with mass spectrometry
- Good knowledge of spoken and written English
- Good communication skills

Advantageous skills:
- Experience in cryo techniques
- Experience with quadrupole mass spectrometry
- Knowledge in Atmospheric Physics
