[Met-jobs] Internship in NWP optimization for PV production forecasting

Reuniwatt is a French start-up, settled in Reunion Island (Indian Ocean), Paris and Sydney. Reuniwatt’s team has developed a unique and patented solar power production forecasting tool named Soleka. Soleka uses artificial intelligence-based techniques, vision systems, numerical models and satellite images to achieve efficient predictions.

Photovoltaic (PV) production forecasting essentially consists of predicting the cloud cover above a given site. For irradiance forecasts beyond some hours ahead, numerical weather prediction (NWP) models are the only reliable tool to provide such forecasts. The regional NWP model WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) is a highly flexible model which allows irradiance forecasting at high spatio-temporal resolutions. The quality of regional NWP forecasts is influenced by multiple aspects and parameters of the respective model. Examples are the choice of physical parameterisation schemes (e.g. cloud microphysics, convection, radiation), nesting configuration and grid spacing, time steps, amount of vertical model layers and external data sources. Finding the optimal model configuration for a given site is therefore a complex challenge.

Objective:
The objective for this internship is to find optimal WRF configurations regarding solar irradiance forecasting for various regions around the world and to develop a system which is able to find these configurations automatically.

Qualifications:
Bachelor/Master of Science in one of the following fields: Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Physics, Remote Sensing, Applied Mathematics.

Skills:
We are looking for a skilled and motivated intern interested in numerical weather prediction, atmospheric science, radiative transfer modelling and renewable energies.
Experience with NWP models would be desirable.
Experience with one or more of these tools would be a plus: WRF, NCL, R, Matlab, shell scripting.

Location:
The intern will be based in Reunion Island (St Pierre).

Duration:
6 months beginning as soon as possible.

Compensation:
€650/month + 1 return flight ticket to Reunion Island.
