The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, a multidisciplinary center for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for a
Post-Doctorate in Geophysical Turbulence (f/m; MPIM-W025)
The applicant will be part of the Max Planck Research Group “Turbulence Mixing Processes in the Earth System”. The aim of our research is to advance our understanding and parametrization of small-scale turbulence in the planetary boundary layer and its coupling to large-scale dynamics. We are seeking one post-doc to further develop his/her career along these lines.
Specific topics we are currently working on are cloud entrainment, shear effects in unstable boundary layers, statistical properties of moisture fields, and the role of large-scale coherent structures near the surface and near the entrainment zone, thought research need not be restricted to these topics.
Qualifications / experience
The applicant is expected to have a PhD in natural sciences or engineering sciences. A basic knowledge of turbulence (fundamental research and/or modeling), geophysical flows and numerical simulations is required. Experience in atmospheric or ocean turbulence is of advantage. Good skills in programming and computer science will be regarded very favourably, since the applicant will work with large-scale computing systems (unix or GNU/linux OS, parallel computing). The working language is English.
The selection criteria will value the qualifications, and the experience of the candidates with respect to the text above.
The positions are initially offered for one year, with the possibility of an extension to three years, starting on November 2016.
Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (up to TVoeD E14), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.
The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.
