Part of the EU-funded training network on “Cloud Microphysics, Turbulence and Telemetry” (COMPLETE), Imperial College London is recruiting 2 PhD students to study the behaviour of particles in turbulent clouds near the cloud-edge, where the flow transitions from turbulent to non-turbulent across very thin interfaces. Two different aspects of this process will be investigated: 1) the study of particles in turbulent flows with well-defined turbulent to non-turbulent interfaces such as turbulent shear layers and/or wakes and/or jets, and 2) the effect of the buoyancy on droplets near the cloud edge. Both projects will make use of state-of-the-art codes for Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation. The projects will be supervised by Prof. Christos Vassilicos and Dr Maarten Van Reeuwijk.

 

Given the collaborative nature of the project, a number of visits to partner institutions for training or collaborative research or exchange of information are envisaged. Applicants should have a first degree (or equivalent) in Meteorology, Engineering, Maths or Physics with a background in both Fluid Mechanics and Numerical Methods.

 

Applicants must not have a PhD and must have fewer than 4 years research experience. At the time of selection, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work or studies) in the UK for more than 12 months in the past three years.
