The Climate Dynamics section at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany,
is seeking to appoint a PostDoc scientist with
a background in ocean or climate modeling.

Background and tasks: The position is funded by the German ministry for education and research (BMBF). The research focus is to improve the understanding of the large-scale influence of the inflow from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic through the Agulhas system. The coupled FESOM-ECHAM climate model is to be used in this project. The model resolution in the Agulhas Current System and other relevant key regions will be locally refined to be mesoscale eddy resolving in the unstructured-mesh ocean model FESOM. The successful applicant will be responsible for setting up the model system, running the experiments on supercomputers, analyzing the results, participation in scientific conferences and publication in peer reviewed journals.


Requirements:
PhD in oceanography, climate science, physics or mathematics. Demonstrated skill/proficiency in Fortran or C, fluency in English. Furthermore, experience with configuring and running ocean/climate models and experience in publishing in the peer-reviewed literature are all distinct advantages.


Length of contract: 2 years


Starting date: 1st July, 2016 or later


Salary: Payment will be in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst (TvöD 13).
