Forwarded from CLIMLIST... The University of Utah invites applications for a graduate student (MS/PhD) position in the climate research group at the Atmospheric Sciences Department. The position is funded by the National Science Foundation under the project “Tropospheric Influences on Stratospheric Low-frequency Variability”. This research studies variations in the strength of the wintertime stratospheric polar vortex over the Northern Hemisphere. Such variations are of interest because they are related to variations in the frequency of stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs), which impact weather and climate at the surface. The student will use numerical modelling with simple and complex climate models to investigate the physical pathways for influences of the troposphere on the stratospheric vortex and its subsequent consequences at the surface. The position commences in August 2016. The application deadline is February 21st 2016, and will be extended until the position is filled.
