PhD studentship on the Behaviour of Convective Updraughts

NERC Industrial CASE PhD studentship within the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science (ICAS), in the School of Earth and Environment (SEE) at the University of Leeds and in collaboration with the UK Met Office.

Supervisors: Prof Alan Blyth (SEE, NCAS), Dr Steven Boeing (SEE), Dr Andrew Ross (SEE), Dr Alison Stirling (UK Met Office)

The aim of this PhD project is to improve our understanding of the physical processes that determine the time evolution of convective updraughts. The project will systematically investigate how the dynamics of the updraught depend on the environmental temperature, wind and moisture profiles, using Large-Eddy Modelling. We also want to test if theoretical models that are used in other branches of fluid dynamics can be adapted to describe convective clouds. We expect the results from this project to influence the representation of convection in the next generation of weather and climate models, both at the Met Office and other institutes.

A more detailed project description and details of how to apply can be found here:

Funding

This project has guaranteed funding from a NERC industrial CASE award with the Met Office, i.e. applicants will not be in competition with applicants for other projects within the Leeds-York NERC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP).

Eligibility

UK nationals and those EU nationals who have spent the 3 years immediately preceding the PhD in the UK undertaking undergraduate study or undergraduate study plus a postgraduate Masters are eligible. Other EU candidates are eligible but the funding would cover the fees only. Non-EU candidates are not eligible unless they have Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK or Refugee status.

Application deadline is 11th January but prospective students are encouraged to enquire informally to Prof. Alan Blyth (a.m.blyth[at]leeds.ac.uk) or Dr. Steven Boeing (s.boeing[at]leeds.ac.uk) before this date.
