DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
Faculty of Arts and Science
University of Toronto

JOB POSTING – POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW

*Area of Research:*
The High Arctic is changing very fast and these changes are important, both within the region and as their influence propagates out to lower latitudes. Using measurements from the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL) at Eureka, Nunavut and measurements from other sites around the Arctic and the rest of the globe, the Probing the Atmosphere of the High Arctic (PAHA) project – which involves many Canadian University researchers – is investigating the Atmosphere of the Canadian High Arctic.

The PAHA project has an opportunity for a post-doctoral fellow (PDF) to conduct satellite validation and intercomparison studies using the PEARL dataset. Satellite validation establishes the accuracy and reliability of satellite measurements through comparisons with well-characterized data sets. Within PAHA, we are using this high Arctic data set for validating current satellite missions focusing on trace gases and aerosol properties.

*Description of duties:*
The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting statistical comparisons between PEARL and satellite datasets (with some focus on the Canadian missions SCISAT and OSIRIS); employing innovative comparison methods; and collaborating with satellite science teams, other ground-based measurement sites and other PAHA researchers.

*Salary:*
$45,000 per year.

*Required qualifications:*
A Ph.D. degree in Physics, Atmospheric Science or a relevant field is required. We seek a candidate with expertise in atmospheric data analysis and remote sensing datasets. Experience with satellite validation and/or scientific experience working with satellite retrievals would be advantageous.

*Application instructions*

All individuals interested in this position must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae and a statement indicating how they would expect to contribute to the above project to Prof. Kaley A. Walker by the closing date. Applicants should also arrange for two academic references to be submitted by the closing date.

*Closing date:* 30 November 2015.

*Supervisor:* Prof. Kaley A. Walker

*Expected start date:* 1 March 2016 (or earlier)

*Term:* Until 31 January 2018.

*FTE:* 100%
