Vacancy: Database manager to ICOS/SITES Sweden


The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and its Unit for
Field-based Forest Research invite for applications to the open
positions as Database manager in the area of micrometeorology and
environmental measurements. The position is in long-term climate
projects, with monitoring of greenhouse gases and meteorological
measurements and has its base at the forest research station, located in
the Svartberget Experimental Forest (Lat 64°14’ N, Long 19°14’ E) near
Vindeln, about 70 km northwest of the town Umeå, Sweden.


The main tasks include development, management and maintenance of
databases for scientific data from a large range of long-term monitoring
and experiments. The successful candidate will handle data from
different type of sources, including continuous high frequency data from
environmental sensors and measurement systems as well as manually
recorded observations. As a database manager you will interact closely
with all staff involved in data acquisition to optimize data delivery
and the quality assessment, organization, management and maintenance of
the databases.


Professional requirements

The position requires you to have an academic degree in natural
sciences, such as forestry or agricultural sciences, meteorology,
physical geography, ecology, biogeochemistry or other similar field. It
is also required that you have educational and/or work experience from
database management. You need to have advanced experience from using
Excel, understanding of structured query language (SQL), knowledge of
'relational database management systems' (RDBMS), 'object oriented
database management systems' (OODBMS) and XML database management
systems. Furthermore, it is required that you have advanced knowledge of
programming in relevant programming languages and are familiar with
web-applications. Experience from collecting and handling scientific
data and data quality assessment, as well as project management, is
desirable. The ability to express yourself in speech and writing in
English, is also important, and an advantage if in Swedish as well.
Driving license is required.

ICOS - Integrated Carbon Observation System

- is an European research infrastructure for quantifying and
understanding the greenhouse gas balance of the European continent and
of adjacent regions. The infrastructure is built up as a collaboration
of nationally operated measurement stations in 17 European countries.
ICOS Sweden (http://www.icos-sweden.se) is the Swedish contribution to
this European effort.


SITES - Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science, is a national
coordinated infrastructure for terrestrial and limnological field
research (www.fieldsites.se). SITES contributes to the strengthening of
Swedish research based on measurements and experiments conducted in the
field and is available for all researchers on equal terms, regardless of
affiliation. SITES consists of nine research stations in Sweden and SLU
is the host and coordinator of SITES.
