The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher on Earth system modelling. General information KNMI is a research, monitoring and forecasting organization for meteorology and seismology. It provides weather alerts, produces climate information, and gives advice and information on meteorology, climate and seismology to stakeholders and the general public. The Department of Research & Development on Weather and Climate Models is a recently formed research unit consisting of experts on weather, climate and atmospheric composition modelling. It supports the operational weather forecasting and alert function of KNMI, and contributes to the international network of scientific research in these areas. Expertise areas concentrate on modelling (extreme) meteorological events, physical, chemical and dynamical processes in the atmosphere, sea level rise and global and regional climate change. The research unit consists of approximately 50 staff members and is involved in many national and international research projects. Job information We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on the interactive simulation of aerosol related processes in the global climate model EC-Earth. The candidate will contribute to the further development of EC-Earth as an Earth system model by improving the representation of natural and anthropogenic aerosols and by coupling emissions of aerosol precursors to dynamic vegetation. Special attention will be given to the effect of wildfires on aerosols. In addition, the candidate will perform and analyze model simulations for AerChemMIP, as part of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). The candidate is expected to present his/her work at project meetings and international conferences and publish the results in peer-reviewed journals. The work will be carried out as part of the CRESCENDO project. CRESCENDO (Coordinated Research in Earth Systems and Climate: Experiments, kNowledge, Dissemination and Outreach) is a five-year project funded under the European Union Horizon 2020 programme, starting 1 November 2015. CRESCENDO involves 25 European institutes and includes the seven leading European Earth system models. Requirements We are looking for a candidate with a PhD degree in atmospheric science or a related field. Applicants will be knowledgeable in aerosol and climate science and have good programming and analysis skills. Experience with coding in Fortran or an equivalent language, Unix/Linux environments, and analysis tools like cdo, Python, R, or similar software packages is required. The successful applicant will have good verbal and written communication skills. Details The position is temporary for a period of three years, starting in 2016. Considering the current composition of the research unit, women are explicitly invited to apply for this position. Further information about this position can be obtained from dr. Twan van Noije (+31 30 2206562, firstname.lastname@example.org).
