Open PhD Position
The Leibniz-Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) is intensifying its experimental and theoretical research in the fields of cloud physics, and here in particular the dynamics of warm boundary layer clouds. In this context we are looking for a PhD student.
The position is located in the cloud group of TROPOS. The salary level is according to German public service regulation (65% TV-L 13). The deadline for applicants is November 30rd, 2015 or when the position is filled. Applicants should have a university degree in physics, meteorology or aerospace engineering with a strong background in atmospheric physics and cloud dynamics.
The main task of the successful candidate will be an extensive field campaign over the Azores with our helicopter-borne measurement payload ACTOS. This work includes some technical support during the planning phase, performing the experiment itself, analyzing the collected comprehensive data set, and publication of the gained result. The main scientific focus is on a detailed description of turbulent mixing at the top of stratocumulus clouds (entrainment). This project is embedded in an international effort. It is mandatory that the candidate is fluent in spoken and written English.
Though the focus of the project is on experimental work, candidate should be willing also to work on theoretical aspects. Knowledge of a high-level programming language for data analysis is required. Experiences regarding airborne measurements would be advantageous.
We are offering the possibility to work in an interdisciplinary team, at one of the most renowned atmospheric research institutes and in one of the most attractive cities in Germany.
Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply.
Please send your application directly to me by ordinary mail or email (one pdf document).
