As a mid-size university with 250 professorships and 19.000 students, the University of Bremen is one of eleven universities having been successful in the German Excellence Initiative. In autumn 2015 a new research group, to be headed by Ben Marzeion, will be established at the Institute of Geography. The group’s research topics will include climate, glaciers, water availability, and sea level rise.

The Institute of Geography in the Department of Social Sciences, University of Bremen, invites applications for the following academic position (under the condition of job release), starting September 15th, 2015, for 3 years, which can be extended depending on performance:

We are looking for a PhD student who will take part in modeling of mountain glaciers and ice caps on regional and global scales. The range of topics that may be addressed includes the climatic mass balance of glaciers, ice dynamics, calving dynamics, glacier reconstructions and projections, and impacts of glaciers on water availability and sea level. We will apply advanced validation and calibration methods and develop our model(s) in international collaborations.

The position also requires teaching within physical geography (2 hr/week during the semester).

To apply successfully, you will:

- have a Master of Science in a field of Earth science with proven, strong mathematical/physical background, or a Master of Science in physics/mathematics/informatics with previous experience in an Earth science;
- have demonstrated skills in scientific programming;
- be fluent in English (equivalent to CEFR level C1).

It will be advantageous if you can demonstrate:

- experience in any or multiple of the specific research areas of the group mentioned above;
- working experience in a supercomputing environment;
- Python and/or git skills.
- proficiency in German (ideally CEFR level B2).
