NIWA is one of New Zealand’s most dynamic research organisations, with expertise in areas vital to the future economic and environmental prosperity of the nation. We are New Zealand’s leading natural resources and environmental science services provider to public and private sector customers.

We are looking for experienced Meteorologists/Forecasters to join our busy team and strengthen our capability to meet the significant increase in demand from the public and industry for our short, medium and long-term weather, climate and environmental forecasting services.

The key purpose of these positions is to contribute to the delivery of our meteorological and environmental forecasting services by preparing regular forecasts and communicating these through a range of media, including print, digital, radio and television. A major emphasis will be on contributing to the development, communication, marketing and deployment of environmental forecasting services and products for weather-sensitive clients, particularly in the local government, agricultural and other commercial sectors. Due to the variety of the services we provide, these positions will involve rostered duties to cover our weekday, weekend and early morning/late evening delivery requirements.

You will have exceptional communication skills, advanced knowledge of the latest meteorology, climate and environmental science forecasting techniques, extensive multi-channel media delivery experience, along with the ability to accurately analyse data and models to create forecasts. As an experienced professional in this field, you will have a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, physics or atmospheric science, and/or equivalent experience in a relevant aspect of engineering or environmental science, along with a qualification and/or training in weather forecasting and media presenting. A comprehensive knowledge of New Zealand meteorology and climate (including atmosphere, hydrosphere and marine environments) and climate outlook science would be an advantage.

This is an exciting opportunity to join New Zealand’s internationally renowned environmental research and forecasting organisation. We are offering a competitive remuneration package, a vibrant central city location, free car parking and the opportunity to work as part of a progressive and highly innovative team.
