In a joint appointment, the University of Potsdam and the Alfred
Wegener Institute (AWI), Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine
Research (AWI) invite applications for the following Full
Professorship for Physics of the Atmosphere at the Institute
for Physics and Astronomy.|
The post is to be filled as soon as possible. The position will be located at AWI's research unit in Potsdam, Germany. We are looking for a person with outstanding scientific qualifications in the field of physics and dynamics of the atmosphere, with a strong background in both observations and modeling. The incumbent is expected to carry out forefront research on atmospheric polar processes (Arctic and Antarctic) and to further our understanding of tropospheric and stratospheric changes in Polar Regions, taking into account interactions with other components of the climate system. The successful applicant will further develop the existing expertise of the section "Atmospheric Circulations" and is responsible for its representation on a national and international level. Furthermore, it is expected that the successful applicant will coordinate AWI's meteorological research activities carried out at the two sites of Potsdam and Bremerhaven. Finally, close collaboration with the other sections of the Climate Sciences department as well as contributions to interdisciplinary research with biologists and geo-scientists within the Research Programme Polar Regions and Coasts in Changing Earth System (http://www.awi.de/en/research/research_programme/ ) are anticipated.
AWI is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and receives funding from the federal and state governments. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology and geophysics and thus provides an ideal framework to employ multidisciplinary approaches. AWI is one of the world's leading institutions in the field of polar and marine research and provides excellent working conditions by international standards. The successful candidate will have access to the AWI research infrastructure (Research icebreaker Polarstern, research aircrafts Polar 5 and 6 as well as the polar stations AWIPEV and Neumayer station III) and regional as well as global atmospheric and climate models.
The professorship is located in AWI's Climate Sciences department at the Research Unit in Potsdam. Teaching obligations amount to two hours per week at the University of Potsdam and involve participation in the programme for Bachelor and Master students in Climate Physics.
