Post-doctoral fellowship at CNRM
(CNRM-GAME, UMR 3589 - METEO-FRANCE, CNRS)

Applications are invited for one postdoctoral research fellowship starting in 
September 2015 at Météo-France, in the Mesoscale Modelling Group of Centre 
National de Recherches Météorologiques (CNRM-GAME) in Toulouse, France 
(http://www.cnrm.meteo.fr/) to work on the following subject:

Assimilation of GPS reflection in situ data into a land surface model
(18-month contract)

Funding source: "Réseau Thématique de Recherche Avancée - Sciences et 
Technologies pour  l’Aéronautique et l’Espace" (RTRA-STAE), Toulouse, France.

CNRM develops the ISBA land surface model within SURFEX, an operational 
modeling platform  able to simulate the terrestrial water and carbon fluxes. 
SURFEX is coupled to a number of
atmospheric and hydrological models, and includes a land data assimilation 
system (LDAS) based on an Extended Kalman filter, able to analyze soil moisture 
and the vegetation biomass.
The post-doctorate fellow will contribute to the analysis of the geophysical 
variables
derived from GPS antennas (GNSS-R technique) at the research land monitoring
sites of METEOPOLE-FLUX and Lamasquere in southwestern France, and at 
operational GNSS stations in France. The observations will be compared with 
soil moisture and vegetation biomass estimates given by the LDAS over France. 
The impact of various environmental factors on the GNSS-R data will be 
assessed, together with the use in the LDAS of various soil hydrology models. 
Finally, the feasibility of assimilating in situ GNSS-R data into
SURFEX will be investigated. The results will be published in a scientific 
journal.

The net monthly salary will vary from about 2300 € to 2600 € before income tax, 
depending on qualification.

The candidates should have knowledge on land surface modelling and/or data 
assimilation, and notions of geophysical measurement techniques. They should be 
familiar with programming languages, the Linux environment, with data analysis 
and graphic softwares (Python, R, IDL, ...).
