Postdoc 'Towards a fully coupled ice and climate model on geological time scales' (1,0 fte)

IMAU is looking for a motivated Post-doc (m/f) to study regional sea level variations on geological time scales. This is addressed with a coupled global ice sheet model, which solves at the same time the sea level equation. This includes gravitational and rotational effects. In this way local expressions of sea level change can be simulated. Coupling of this model to a climate model of intermediate complexity allows transient simulation of key periods in the geological past and offers the opportunity to combine model inferences and data in a more coherent way.

Profile

Applicants preferably have a strong background in geophysics and ice dynamics in particular at PhD level. Experience is required with numerical ice sheet models, and programming (FORTRAN) on UNIX-based computer systems. English (good oral and writen skills) is essential and a track record of published papers is a prerequisite.

Offer

The candidate is offered a full-time position for 2.5 years. The salary is supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8,3% per year. In addition we offer: a pension scheme, a partially paid parental leave, flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities. The research group will provide the candidate with necessary support on all aspects of the project. The gross salary is in the range between € 2,977 (scale 10, grade 4) and maximum € 3,908 (scale 10, grade 12) per month.

About us

Utrecht University has great ambitions for its teaching quality and study success rates. This also applies to its clear research profiles, which are centred around four themes: Sustainability, Life Sciences, Youth & Identity, and Institutions. Utrecht University plays a prominent role in our society and contributes to finding the answers to topical and future societal issues.

The Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research Utrecht (IMAU) is an interfaculty research institute that focuses on the fundamental aspects of the climate system. Research is organized in five main themes:

  1. ice and climate
  2. ocean circulation and climate
  3. atmospheric physics and chemistry
  4. atmospheric dynamics and boundary layer meteorology and
  5. coastal and shelf sea dynamics.

The IMAU includes some twelve faculty members, seventeen postdocs and twenty-five PhD students. The graduate programme is organized in the Buys Ballot research school.

Additional information about the vacancy can be obtained from Dr R.S.W. van de Wal: tel. +31 30 2533259.

As part of the selection procedure, the candidate is expected to give an oral presentation.
