Background

The Surface Transport and Utilities (ST&U) Science team sits within the Applied Science and Scientific Consulting deputy directorate and is responsible for developing the scientific capabilities required to provide products and services of benefit to these sectors. The team works with the relevant business managers and related Science teams to propose and deliver work for Surface Transport and Utilities (ST&U) customers, whilst also contributing to the development of the cross-cutting Applied Science scientific and technical capabilities. The team also undertakes work relevant to other sectors where the need arises.

Job Purpose

To deliver and apply scientific research to enhance the Met Office’s capability and reputation, improving the quality of Met Office products, predictions or advice to customers predominantly in Surface Transport and Utilities sectors.

Job Responsibilities

Scientist: To contribute to the writing of their job plan to support the ST&U research and development programme.
Senior Scientist: To plan scientific or technical projects to define a part of the ST&U research and development programme.

Scientist: To carry out research and development to deliver agreed project outputs which improve Met Office systems, products or advice for the benefit of ST&U customers.
Senior Scientist: To lead and carry out research and development to deliver agreed project outputs which significantly improve Met Office systems, products or advice for the benefit of ST&U customers.

Scientist: To contribute significantly to the presentation and publication/documentation of their work internally and externally in order to communicate advice and/or maintain our scientific/technical capability and integrity and/or to promote our reputation.
Senior Scientist: To lead the presentation and publication/documentation of their work internally and externally in order to communicate advice and/or maintain our scientific/technical capability and integrity and to promote our reputation.

Scientist: To provide scientific/technical advice to other ST&U team members on some work aspects to improve the effectiveness of the team.
Senior Scientist: To train and support staff both within the ST&U team and more widely to enhance our scientific/technical capability.

Senior Scientist: To manage the scientific or technical research projects within the ST&U team to improve Met Office systems or products.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1. An honours degree (2:1 or above) or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline, and subsequent research and/or delivery experience to PhD level or equivalent (Scientist) / to postdoc level or equivalent (Senior Scientist).
2. Strong organisational skills and demonstrated ability to deliver successful projects (both independently and as part of a team) against tight deadlines, prioritising and organising own work as required.
3. Ability to interpret ST&U customer requirements for Applied Science work, and select and apply appropriate scientific techniques to address these requirements.
4. Good understanding of Met Office capabilities of relevance to ST&U customers.
5. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop good working relationships with colleagues and customers.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate complex information to a range of audiences in a clear and inspiring manner.
7. Demonstrated ability to program in IDL, Python or R languages.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1. Experience of working with customers in the Surface Transport and/or Utilities sectors.
2. A track record of managing projects (Senior Scientist) / work packages within projects (Scientist) which deliver successfully to customers.
