[Met-jobs] Post-doc position in atmospheric physics

From Celine Mari <celine.mari@aero.obs-mip.fr>
To met-jobs@lists.reading.ac.uk.
Date Tue, 09 Dec 2014 15:11:13 +0100

The Laboratoire d'Aérologie (LA, Toulouse, France) offers a 18 month postdoctoral position in the field of atmospheric physics at the interface with physical volcanology, in close collaboration with the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP) . The position is funded through the French ANR project “STRAP” (Trans-disciplinary collaboration to investigate volcano plumes risks), that aims to develop a pre-operational forecasting system of volcanic plumes.

The main objective of the post-doc is to adapt the Meso-NH mesoscale model to volcanic plumes using a new parametrization of turbulent entrainment based on a coupled approach combining laboratory experiments and numerical 1D and LES simulations. The results will be applied to the observed raising heights of target eruptions (Piton de la Fournaise and/or Etna), and to the interpretation of surface and satellite measurements to constrain the model outputs.

Qualifications:

The candidate should have a PhD in atmospheric sciences or physical volcanology or geophysical fluid dyamics, with strong programming skills. The ideal candidate will possess an understanding of microscale and/or mesoscale meteorology and the ability to program in Fortran. Additional skills in LES atmospheric modeling and turbulence are considered as a plus. The applicant must speak and write English fluently and have good communication skills and publication records.

Salary and benefits:

The targeted start date for the position is approximately June 2015. The appointment is for 100% time. The post-doctorate will be recruited for 18 months with a net monthly salary comprised between 2000€ and 2300€, commensurate with experience. This includes social services and health insurance.

To Apply:

Applications should be submitted by email to Celine Mari (celine.mari@aero.obs-mip.fr) and Edouard Kaminski (kaminski@ipgp.fr). Application material must include a CV, a statement of research interests, a list of publications and the contact details for at least two referees. The deadline for applications is 30 June 2015 but applications will continue to be received until a suitable candidate is found. All letters will be treated as confidential.
