[Met-jobs] Post-doctoral position in tropical cyclone modeling (La Réunion Island, France)
The Tropical Cyclone Research Laboratory (LACy) has an opening for a two-year postdoctoral position in the field of atmospheric science (hurricane modeling and forecasting) in Réunion Island. The position is funded through the French ANR project “SPICy”, which aims to develop a pre-operational forecasting system of coastal and inland floods during the approach and landfall of tropical cyclones. The work will be conducted at the French Weather Service (Météo-France) regional center in Saint-Denis de La Réunion (Indian Ocean), France.
The position is opened as of 1st MARCH 2015. The deadline for receipt of applications is DECEMBER 15, 2014.
The successful applicant will develop NWP model configurations required to fulfill the objectives of the project. This includes:
- Producing ensemble forecasts of wind and pressure fields associated with tropical cyclones using the non-hydrostatic cloud research model Méso-NH (http://mesonh.aero.obs-mip.fr/).
- Participating to the development of the new operational, high resolution, NWP model “Arome-Indian” that will be deployed in 2016 by the French Weather Service for operational tropical cyclone forecast in the SW Indian Ocean basin. The hired individual will be, in particular, involved in the deployment and improvement of the 3DVAR mesoscale data assimilation scheme of the model (https://ams.confex.com/ams/31Hurr/webprogram/Paper244069.html).
The candidate should have a PhD in atmospheric or environmental sciences, with strong statistical and programming skills. Experience in mesoscale modeling would be considered as an important additional skill. The applicant must speak and write English fluently and have good communication skills and publication records. The post-doctorate will be recruited for 24 months with a net monthly salary comprised between 2000€ and 2400€, commensurate with experience. This includes social services and health insurance.
Applications should be submitted by email to Olivier Bousquet (email@example.com) and Francois Bonnardot (firstname.lastname@example.org). Application material must include a CV, a statement of research interests, a list of publications and the contact details for at least two referees.
Please, forward this announcement to anybody who may be interested in this position.
