The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), a multidisciplinary center for Climate and Earth System research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for
2 Post-Doctorates (f/m) – 2014-25 –
One of the positions focuses on the interactions between the land surface and organized convective systems and the representation of such interactions in models using different grid spacing and treatment of convection. The second position aims at investigating processes influencing non-squall convective organization and its interplay with precipitation on different spatial scales. Both positions require conducting simulations with an atmospheric model run in various configurations and resolutions. Use of observations to complement the analysis is desirable. The results should be used towards improving the representation of such processes in coarser-resolution models.
Applicants should have
- a PhD in Meteorology, Physics, Geography, Geosciences or related fields
- expertise in scientific computing, including very good programming skills: (FORTRAN on Unix platforms)
- experience with data analysis and atmospheric modeling
- excellent communication skills in English
For further information on the positions, please contact Dr. Cathy Hohenegger (cathy.hohenegger(at) mpimet.mpg.de) and visit http://www.mpimet.mpg.de.
The positions are initially offered for three years pending final decision on the funding volume. Payment will be in accordance with experience following the German public service positions (TVoeD E13/14), which include extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service. The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.
The selection process will start on 15 December 2014 and will continue until the positions are filled. Preferred starting dates are early 2015 but later dates are possible. Please submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of at least two references via E-Mail: email@example.com as a single pdf-attachment with max. 5 MB only.
