Post-Doc Position at the Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri, Florence, Italy

Job Title: Post-Doc
Location: Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF) - Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri, Florence, Italy
Gross Salary: 31 KEuro
Deadline: 22 December 2014
Position: 1 year renewable
Gross Salary: 31 KEuro per year

The Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF), Italy invites applicants for a post-doc position of one year renewable
that will start no later than April 2015. Deadline of application is 22 December 2014.
The candidate is supposed to work in the context of the project "ALTA: atmospheric automatic forecast system" aiming
at forecast atmospherical parameters and optical turbulence at Mt.Graham (Arizona), site of the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT),
two 8.4 m telescopes under the supervision of Dr. Elena Masciadri.

The optical turbulence is particularly critical for ground-based astronomical observations because it
perturbs the amplitude and the phase of wavefronts coming from observed astronomical objects producing blurred
images at the focus of telescopes and decreasing the potential angular resolution of a 8-10 m class telescope
to that of a 10 cm telescope.
Adaptive optics (AO) techniques are able to correct a great part of these perturbations but these techniques
strongly depend on the optical turbulence conditions. AO best performances (and consequently the most challenging
astrophysical observations) are obtained when the optical turbulence is weak.
Forecasts of the optical turbulence is therefore fundamental to optimize astronomical observations.

Experts in atmospherical numerical modeling are encouraged to apply.
