INVERSE ESTIMATION OF NORTH ATLANTIC CO2 FLUXES
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA). The position will contribute to the RAGNARoCC project (Radiatively Active Gases from the North Atlantic Region and Climate Change : http://www.greenhouse-gases.org.uk/ragnarocc), the marine component of NERC’s Programme on Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Feedbacks.
RAGNARoCC’s overall objectives are to quantify present-day air-sea fluxes of CO2 in the North Atlantic, and to improve understanding of the processes responsible for their spatial and temporal variability. The focus of this position is to derive robust regional estimates of North Atlantic CO2 fluxes using numerical models. Project tasks include the derivation of inverse flux estimates using the GEOS-Chem atmospheric model together with CO2 measurements from the long-term surface network and new shipboard measurements made by RAGNARoCC partners. RAGNAROCC is a UK-wide multi-institutional consortium; the successful applicant will collaborate with project partners and with members of the wider NERC Greenhouse Gas Programme in achieving project aims (http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/funded/programmes/greenhouse/).
The project is well-suited for a candidate with a background in the natural sciences, applied mathematics or engineering. Experience of some of the following is desirable: numerical modeling of oceanic or atmospheric systems, inverse analysis techniques, scientific programming skills and knowledge of FORTRAN/IDL/MATLAB. We seek highly motivated candidates with good organisational skills and the ability to work collaboratively. This is an exciting opportunity for an early-career researcher to apply cutting-edge numerical analysis techniques in a project of strategic importance to UK research on greenhouse gases.
